The Role – Data Engineer (Level 5) on the Customer Service Analytics Team
As a senior member of the Data Science & Analytics (DSE) group, you will partner with data engineers, software engineers, and business owners to design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines that power critical customer‑service metrics. This role demands a blend of technical depth, strategic thinking, and the ability to work autonomously in a fast‑moving environment. You will be instrumental in translating raw interaction logs into clean, reliable datasets that inform product decisions, operational improvements, and personalized member experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- End‑to‑End Pipeline Development: Design, implement, and maintain scalable data pipelines using big‑data technologies such as Hive, Presto, Spark, and Flink to ingest and process tens of millions of records daily.
- Data Modeling & Architecture: Create flexible data models that evolve with changing source systems and business requirements, ensuring long‑term maintainability and performance.
- Metric Engineering: Collaborate with analysts to define, calculate, and validate core customer‑service metrics (e.g., first‑contact resolution, churn risk, sentiment scores) that drive strategic initiatives.
- Quality Assurance: Implement automated testing, data validation, and monitoring frameworks to guarantee data accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Tooling & Visualization: Build and enhance custom visualization tools and dashboards that surface insights to stakeholders across product, operations, and leadership.
- Cross‑Functional Partnership: Work closely with software engineers, product managers, and business leaders to translate analytical needs into technical solutions, fostering a data‑centric culture.
- Performance Optimization: Continuously profile and tune pipelines for cost‑effective processing, leveraging cloud resources and best‑in‑class practices.
- Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Produce clear documentation, run internal workshops, and mentor junior engineers to spread best practices throughout the organization.
Essential Qualifications
- Minimum four years of hands‑on experience building data pipelines with big‑data platforms (Hive, Presto, Spark, Flink) on medium to large‑scale datasets (tens of millions of records).
- Proven expertise in data modeling, with a track record of designing adaptable schemas that accommodate evolving data sources and business logic.
- Strong programming skills in Python or Scala, with a passion for writing clean, maintainable, and well‑documented code.
- Advanced SQL proficiency and a commitment to data quality, including experience with data validation frameworks.
- Demonstrated analytical aptitude: ability to dissect complex business problems, develop metric definitions, and prioritize work autonomously.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset, enabling productive partnerships with analysts, engineers, and senior business leaders.
Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills
- Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., AWS Redshift, Google BigQuery, Azure Synapse) and container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes.
- Familiarity with streaming data architectures and real‑time analytics frameworks.
- Background in customer‑service analytics, churn modeling, or sentiment analysis.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform, CloudFormation), and automated testing suites.
- Track record of influencing product roadmaps through data‑driven insights.
Core Competencies for Success
- Technical Judgment: Ability to evaluate trade‑offs between performance, cost, and complexity, and to make decisions that align with long‑term business goals.
- Problem‑Solving Mindset: Proactive in identifying bottlenecks, root causes, and opportunities for improvement across the data stack.
- Ownership & Autonomy: Comfortable operating in a small, high‑impact team where you will drive initiatives from concept to production with minimal supervision.
- Collaboration & Influence: Skilled at translating technical concepts into business language and building consensus among diverse stakeholders.
- Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying current with emerging data technologies, industry trends, and best practices.
